August 11th - October 7th at the Mighty Tieton Warehouse

Opening Reception: Saturday, August 11th from 12 - 4pm

ABOUT

The 9th annual 10x10x10xTieton juried exhibition invites artists from all over the world to create work no larger than 10 inches in any dimension, no media restrictions. The result? A wide-ranging exhibition that includes sculpture, painting, photography, book art, 3D printed objects, found objects, collage, jewelry, and everything in between.

Jurors Sean Elwood, former Director of Programs & Initiatives at the Creative Capital Foundation in New York, and Monica Miller, Executive Director of Gallery One Visual Arts Center in Ellensburg, looked at 914 total submissions. Paring down to just 167 pieces for the show was not an easy process for the jurors, “as there were inevitably some very good things not included,” says Sean. “It’s a subjective process. But despite the challenges, picking a show like this can be extremely rewarding. I looked for artworks that were well realized, that embodied beauty and/or intelligence, that were distinctly of this time or embodied a sense of timelessness.”

“[The jurying process] was an exercise in being open to surprise and learning about how art can change your mind,” says Monica. “I found opportunity to contemplate the artists’ voice vs the mastery of the craft, be it printmaking, painting, pottery, photography, etc. Contrary to my intention of looking for pieces that were both strong masters of the medium and independent, strong voices, I found that often materials treated in an unpolished way delighted me if the voice was strong enough and similarly I stayed attracted to the well-crafted and polished piece even if I had seen other comparable subjects addressed.”

10x10x10xTieton features artwork by 118 artists from all over, including Canada, Uruguay, the Virgin Islands, across the US, and many from right here in the Pacific Northwest. All works are printed in a handbound exhibition catalogue by Marquand Books and made in Tieton at Paper Hammer Studios. Each exhibiting artist receives a free copy while additional copies are available for sale.

Upon reflection of the exhibition as a whole, Sean states, “I came away with an appreciation for the variety and level of creative energy being released into the world by the submitting artists. Seeing these works made me feel (uncharacteristically) hopeful and yes, happy. I hope all the artists can feel that their creativity is appreciated and celebrated by this process.”

Visitors are encouraged to attend the opening reception at the Mighty Tieton Warehouse on Saturday, August 11 from 12 - 4pm. Both jurors will be at the Opening as will artists featured in the exhibition. Food and drink will provided by Tieton Cider Works, Bale Breaker, Gilbert Cellars, Basalt Coffee Roasters, and Taste & See Deli. While in Tieton, don’t forget to stop by BOXX Gallery’s collaboration with Cowiche Canyon Conservancy, “Images of the Shrub-Steppe” show, juried by Leo Adams.

Those unable to make the reception can see the exhibition during regular gallery hours on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through October 7 from 12 - 3pm.
